Heart disease can be overwhelming to patients, owners, and veterinarians alike. To see a friend, family member, or patient deal with a heart problem is frustrating. Everyone wants to help, but they are not often exactly sure what should be done. Dr. Goodwin is committed to bringing ease to those patients, owners, and veterinarians, dealing with heart disease.

Our Compassionate Care Cardiology Service has been designed to specifically grant each family the personal attention necessary in developing a successful cardiac therapeutic protocol. Therapy is tailored to control the patient’s disease, while still keeping in mind the owner’s busy schedule. The initial consultation will include a thorough history and physical examination followed by an outline of the primary diagnostics needed to determine the extent of the cardiac ailment present. These tests are performed with the owners present so they may better understand their pet’s condition. After the diagnostics are performed, the disease process diagnosed will be completely explained so that the owners can better understand their role in combating the malady. A record of the patient’s physical examination findings, diagnostics performed, and the treatment planned will be faxed to the referring veterinarian the day of examination to ensure continuity among those involved in the patient’s care.

An Initial Cardiac Evaluation Includes:

      • History & Cardiac Physical Examination
    • Doppler Blood Pressure Assessment
    • Color Doppler Echocardiography
    • Thoracic Radiograph
    • Bloodwork

In most cases, these tests give us the information necessary to treat the cardiac disease present. Occasionally further testing or a cardiac interventional procedure is necessary to help identify the problem. The treatment of cardiac birth defects often requires an interventional procedure to alleviate clinical signs.
